Apartheid is an Afrikaan word meaning apartness. Apartheid started in 1948. South Africa is a land of natural resources,and fertile lands. Their resources range from diamonds and gold to platinum and their land is fertile enough to feed the rest of the world if well planted. Yet many believed Africa to be the Dark Continent, a continent of poverty and harsh climate.By 1950, the government had banned marriages between whites and people of other races, and did not allow relations between black and white South Africans. In 1651 the Dutch settled in South Africa. In 1756, they import slaves from West Africa, Malaysia, and India, establishing the dominance of whites over non-whites in the region. In 1867, diamond mining began in South Africa. Africans were given the most dangerous jobs and were paid far less than white workers and were housed in fenced like prison cells. In 1963 Nelson Mandela, head of the African National Congress, is jailed for 27 years for saying that Apartheid is wrong. In 1994 Nelson Mandela, the African resistance leader who had been jailed for 27 years, is elected President and Apartheid ended.
